The Foundling Museum
In a leafy, secluded square at the heart of historic Bloomsbury, the award winning Foundling Museum celebrates the history of Thomas Coram's Foundling Hospital. Britain's first children's charity and England's first public art gallery. The museum continues to celebrate the ways in which artists have helped improve children's lives for over 270 years. We do this through a dynamic programme of temporary exhibitions, collections displays, artists' projects, concerts, events and learning activities for all ages.
The museum houses beautiful eighteenth century interiors preserved from the original Hospital building, as well as an internationally important collection of art that includes paintings by Hogarth, Reynolds, Ramsey, Brooking and Gainsborough. The museum also contains fascinating artefacts relating to the composer Handel, who along with Hogarth was, instrumental in the establishment of the hospital.
