Shortmead provides a wide range of opportunities to make your wedding day special all year round, offering a choice of location for both your ceremony and reception.

In the summer, use of the gardens and grounds provide the perfect location for a larger celebration, whether formal or informal. In winter the house and stables provide wonderful settings for an intimate occasion, and of course you will have exclusive use of Shortmead for your event.

Ceremonies and receptions

As well as traditional civil ceremonies, Shortmead is licensed to conduct ceremonies from cultural denominations as well as humanist weddings. More recently, we’ve also conducted a number of civil partnerships so whatever your requirements, you can rest assured that we have the correct facilities and can work with communities to provide catering according to religious and cultural dietary requirements.

Shortmead house

There has been a house at Shortmead since the early 16th century with the first mention in 1543 when a Thomas Butcher, the owner of Shortmead Farm, gave money in his will to St Andrew’s Church in Biggleswade.

In the 1790s the house was transformed into the Georgian manor house you see today.

The bridal suite is the perfect escape from your guests whilst you get ready, but with an ideal view over the main function area to see what your guests are up to and once your fantastic day has come to a close the suite is the perfect place to start your honeymoon.

Gardens

In 1999 Shortmead House stood in five acres of wooded overgrown land. A matted undergrowth of bramble, thistle, ivy, snowberry, and ground elder choked any previous domestic planting. The half acre lake was a muddy puddle filled with debris and the orchard and kitchen garden were very neglected. But beneath the undergrowth there was evidence of former care.
